Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a blue shield of the shape of the shield on the great seal of the State of New York, within an 1/8 inch (.32cm) orange border an Indian head in profile with five feathers in top knot in orange. The overall dimensions of the shield are 3 inches (7.62cm) in height and 2 1/4 inches (5.72cm) in width.

Symbolism
The territory of this Division is the greater portion of New York State. The colors are those of the Dutch House of Nassau, the device is the Iroquois chief, the feathers representing the Five Nations.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 98th Division (Training) on 24 April 1967. It was amended on 10 March 1969, to correct the dimensions of the insignia. It was amended to reduce the size of the border on 8 August 1997. The insignia was redesignated effective 16 September 2008, for the 98th Training Division. (TIOH Drawing Number A-1-145)

Description/Blazon
On a silver nonagon an octagon per fess scarlet and blue, on the scarlet a silver scroll and on the blue a gold Indian head.

Symbolism
The red is for the Artillery and blue for Infantry to designate the cooperation of the Infantry-Artillery team of the Division. The blank scroll implies that "here upon our deeds will be inscribed." The gold Indian head on the blue field designates the colors of the House of Nassau and originates from the Division insignia. The numerical designation is indicated by the nine (9) sides of the nonagon and the eight (8) sides of the octagon.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 98th Infantry Division on 5 March 1943. It was amended on 15 March 1943, to correct the wording of the description. On 24 April 1967, the insignia was redesignated for the noncolor bearing units of the 98th Division (Training). The insignia was amended to correct the wording of the symbolism on 20 April 1973. It was redesignated effective 16 September 2008, for the 98th Training Division.
